In this episode of On the Sidelines, host Paul McGraw sits down with Rob, Suzanne, and Robert DeKleine to discuss the journey that brought their family from Pennsylvania to Westborough, Massachusetts—all in pursuit of Robert’s hockey development.
What began with a simple “learn to skate” program at age four evolved into a competitive hockey career that required countless hours on the road, early morning games, and major family sacrifices. As Robert advanced from local youth hockey to elite AAA programs, opportunities eventually led the family to relocate to Massachusetts so he could compete with one of the nation’s top youth hockey organizations.
Now a player at Belmont Hill School, Robert shares his experiences competing at national development camps, participating in junior hockey showcases in Canada, and being selected by the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL Draft. The family also discusses the challenges of relocating careers, finding a new community, and balancing hockey with academics and family life.
